Cause
A structural leg length difference will allow the ‘long’ leg to excessively pronate (in an attempt to level the pelvis) causing the leg to jam into the hip socket, which can contribute to functional spinal scolisis – ofter causing nerve impingement in between the vertebrae.
Symptoms
– Pain in the lower back
– Dull ache in the hipjoint – especially whilst standing or after exercise
– Referred pain in the upper back
– Scoliosis of the spine – evident in L1 to L5 and the thoracic region
– Sciatic pain
Treatment
Effective treatments of a structural leg length difference involves fitting ICB Orthotics moulded to STJ Neutral to control the excessive pronation of the foot on the longer leg side. An appropriate size heel lift should then be added to the orthotic on the short leg, which will assist in leveling the pelvis.
